Le Moulin de Pensol

Where wild nature meets a perfect french holiday

Gites & B&B in 8 hectares of wild Limousin countryside.

A different kind of French Holiday

Le Moulin de Pensol is a small, family-run nature reserve in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin — with four characterful gîtes and three B&B rooms for guests who want to stay a while.
The River Bandiat runs through the middle of the site. Eight hectares of meadows, woodland and ponds surround the buildings. The wildlife here has to be seen to be believed — and our guests consistently tell us it’s the thing they remember most.
Whether you’re here for the butterflies, the walking, a proper family holiday away from screens, or simply a glass of wine on your private terrace listening to the birds — this is your place.

Our Gites and B&B Rooms

What we offer

Food & Drink

Breakfast is available for gîte guests on request — freshly baked croissants and baguettes, yoghurt, jam, butter and coffee delivered to your door. Simple and perfect. For everything else, you're in the right place. The Périgord is one of France's great food regions and the restaurants, markets and producers on your doorstep reflect that. The Wednesday morning market at Piégut-Pluviers — one of the largest in south west France — is just 20 minutes away. Local restaurants range from simple village auberges to serious cooking. We've put together a guide to our favourites.

Swimming

The stunning Lac de Saint-Saud-Lacoussière is just 8 minutes away — a beautiful natural lake with clear water, a shaded picnic area, a 2.5km walk around the water's edge and supervised swimming in July and August. It's the kind of lake that reminds you why you came to France.

Nature, wildlife & Animals

Eight hectares of rewilded land are yours to explore — wildflower meadows with mown paths winding through them, ancient woodland, new ponds already alive with frogs and dragonflies, and the River Bandiat running through the heart of it all. Our mixed herd of horses, donkeys and a mule graze the meadows. Wild deer and boar roam the wider reserve. Sixty-eight species of butterfly have been recorded on site. This is not a managed nature experience — it is the real thing. Guided nature walks with Nik are free for all guests. Just ask.

Our Location

Le Moulin de Pensol sits in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin, in the little village of Pensol — 45 minutes south west of Limoges, on the border of the Dordogne and the Charente. One of France’s most beautiful and unspoilt natural regions, and surprisingly easy to get to.
We’re within a short drive of excellent restaurants, market towns and things to do. Limoges airport and station are 45 minutes away. Angoulême TGV station is 50 minutes. Bike hire can be arranged through us – we work with local cycle specialist Atelier Cycles to deliver bikes directly to your door. Just ask when you book. And if you’d rather not drive at all while you’re here, we’re happy to come and pick you up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reservations are confirmed on receipt of your reservation by email or by phone. Bookings must be paid by acceptable and valid credit card, bank transfer or by cash.

Rates are per room per night. If you have selected supplements they will be added to the total price of the booking.

Rates quoted are correct only for the specific number of guests, nights and dates shown. Should you change the number of guests, dates or room nights, then the rates are subject to change.

Minimum stay for gites is usually 3 days in the quiet season rising to 7 days in July and August. But we like to be flexible when we can be, so get in touch and ask.

We don’t take payment upfront for direct bookings, so if you need to cancel we simply ask for as much notice as possible. If you have booked through Airbnb or Booking.com their standard cancellation policies apply. If you’re unsure, just drop us an email and we’ll sort it out. We’re human beings, not a cancellation policy. 😊

We love animals — we have two dogs of our own and have welcomed guests with dogs, cats, chinchillas and even parrots over the years. Pretty much anything goes as long as it’s well behaved and you let us know in advance!

Dogs are welcome in the gîtes (not the B&B rooms) at €10 per dog per night, up to two dogs per booking. Each gîte has a small fenced garden area. Please keep dogs on a lead around the site and clear up after them. Please don’t leave dogs unattended in the gîtes.

Cats and other pets are welcome — same pricing applies. Cats must be kept indoors at all times as we have dogs on site.

For anything more exotic, just drop us an email and we’ll have a chat.

We are 45 minutes south west of Limoges in departement 87 Haute Vienne on the border of the Dordogne and the Charente. The area used to be known as the Limousin but is now part of the region called Nouvelle Aquitaine. The address for google maps and sat nav is Le Moulin de Pensol, 1 Le Moulin, 87440 PENSOL.

We currently have a beautiful climate here in the Limousin. Mostly hot and dry in the summer with plenty of rain in the winter to keep us green and lush. Not for nothing are we called “Perigord Vert”. But the climate is changing and heatwaves and unusually wet springs are becoming more common.

Our nearest village of Marval is 3Km away. It has an excellent village store that sells everything you might need. Larger supermarkets are just a 15 minute drive away. See our Things to Do section for more info (link).
